Microsoft's small language models that punch above their weight

Microsoft Phi (Phi-3, Phi-4) is a family of small language models (SLMs) that achieve remarkably high performance on reasoning and coding benchmarks relative to their parameter count. Phi-3-mini (3.8B) outperforms models 5x its size on academic benchmarks, making it practical to run on phones and laptops. Phi models use high-quality, textbook-like training data—the 'textbooks are all you need' philosophy—and are available on Azure AI, HuggingFace, and Ollama.
