Chaos Monkey is the original chaos engineering tool developed by Netflix that randomly terminates virtual machine instances in production during business hours to continuously test whether AWS Auto Scaling Groups correctly replace failed instances and whether services gracefully handle unexpected node loss. Its opt-in/opt-out configuration and configurable kill frequency allow teams to gradually adopt chaos testing in their environments. Cloud-native teams and SREs at companies with high availability requirements use Chaos Monkey and the broader Simian Army to build confidence that distributed systems behave correctly under component failures.
